- Updates to ZipCopy, latest version v1.3
- =======================================
-
- The following updates have been incorporated into the new release,
- version 1.3, of ZipCopy. My grateful thanks to all of the loyal
- users who have sent me suggestions for changes & improvements.
-
-
- 1 CONFIGURATION OPTIONS
- -----------------------------
- All configuration options, and the list of files used
- for Project|Reopen, are now stored in the Windows registry. The
- old ZipCopy.CFG file from version 1.2 is read once and then deleted.
-
- The registry entries are stored under the "Current User" primary key,
- so that different users logging into the same machine can each have
- a personalised setup.
-
-
- 2 NEW OPTIONS FOR SYNCHRONISATION
- ---------------------------------------
- New options are available for synchronisation. Previously,
- if a file was missing or outdated on one path, it was automatically
- copied from the other version. Now, it is possible to have other
- options.
-
- For files missing from one path, the options are
- a) Copy from other path (default)
- b) Delete the file
- c) Ignore
-
- For files present on both paths, but of different time/date:
- a) Copy newer version (default)
- b) Delete newer version
- c) Copy older version
- d) Delete older version
- e) Ignore
-
- These options are selected in the Project|Preferences dialog,
- Project page. They are stored in the .ZPR project file.
-
- The addition of the "Delete" options above is accompanied by an
- additional page in the File|Preview dialog for files to be deleted.
- This page will only be visible if there are indeed files to be
- deleted.
-
- Deleted files are dealt with before file copying to minimize problems
- with limited disk space on the target drive.
-
-
- 3 HIDDEN & SYSTEM FILES
- -----------------------------
- Version 1.2 ignored files with the "hidden" and "system" attributes
- during file scanning. These can now be included using checked options
- available in the (new) View Menu. They are also available in the
- "Global" page of the Project|Preferences dialog.
-
-
- 4 THE PROJECT MANAGER
- ---------------------------
- A new mode of operation has been added that deals with multiple
- projects, called the Project Manager. This operates on a list of
- project files, each project having been previously set up in ZipCopy.
-
- The Project Manager displays a list of the project file names,
- and allows synchronisation of individual project files, or all
- the projects sequentially.
-
- Project Manager files, default extension .ZPL, can be loaded using
- the usual Project|Open command/button and are detected automatically.
-
- Project Manager files cannot be nested, i.e. a Project manager file
- can contain only the names of single .ZPR project files.
-
-
- 5 THREE WAYS TO CARRY OUT A SYNC
- --------------------------------------
- With the advent of the Project Manager, ZipCopy now has 3 different
- ways of carrying out a file sync operation. These are
-
- a) Visual mode
- This is the usual, familiar graphical interface involving a single
- project file (as in ver 1.2).
-
- b) List mode
- Sync a list of separate project files using the Project Manager.
-
- c) Auto mode
- Run either a single project (.ZPR file), or a list of projects (.ZPL file)
- automatically from the command line, e.g. by double-clicking on the
- file name using Windows Explorer. In this case, ZipCopy will
- optionally exit at the end of the sync.
-
- The Auto mode is particularly useful for controlling ZipCopy using
- a scheduler program, e.g., Windows Scheduler. The command line
- required is along the following lines:
-
- c:\Program Files\ZipCopy\ZipCopy.exe MyProjects.ZPL
- | |
- Your ZipCopy path Project or Project List file
-
- Options used for each mode are contained in the Project|Preferences
- dialog.
-
-
- 6 MINIMAL USER INTERACTION
- --------------------------------
- The Project|Preferences dialog now provides a number of options to
- cut down on the type and number of messages displayed during the
- file scanning and sync operation. The sync can be made completely
- silent (except for error messages).
-
- Different options can be selected for the three program modes
- described under 5) above.
-
-
- 7 IMPROVED ICON & COLOR DISPLAY
- -------------------------------------
- The icons and arrows used to represent the presence or absence
- of files and the need for updates have been improved for greater
- clarity. See the online help for details.
-
- Path1, Path 2 and excluded file display colors can now be selected
- by the user in the Project|Preferences dialog.
-
-
- 8 STARTUP CONDITIONS
- --------------------------
- ZipCopy now remembers the last-used location and size of the main
- window on the screen, and the location of the most-used dialog
- windows: File Preview and Project Manager. These coordinates are
- saved into the Windows registry.
-
- To override the startup conditions, create a shortcut to ZipCopy.EXE
- and then, using the "Properties" dialog for the shortcut, add one or
- other of the following flags to the command line
-
- Old command line:
-
- c:\..\ZipCopy.exe %1 (the %1 "picks up" the project filename)
-
- New Command line(s):
-
- c:\..\ZipCopy.exe %1 -D (ignore Registry settings on startup)
-
- OR
-
- c:\..\ZipCopy.exe %1 -R (restore default settings on startup)
-
-
- 9 IF A BASE PATH IS MISSING
- ---------------------------------
- If one of the base paths is missing at Preview/Sync time (eg you have
- put in the wrong Zip disk), ZipCopy now waits after displaying
- the error message and gives you an opportunity to change disks
- and retry.
-
- If you set up a project file list involving a removable drive (eg a
- Zip drive), make sure that the projects using the same disk are all
- grouped together in the Program Manager list. This will minimise
- disk changes.
-
-
- 10 FILE RE-OPEN LIST
- -------------------------
- The Re-open list (selected using Project|Reopen) now stores the
- project filenames in order of the most-recently used first.
-
- The list is stored in the Windows registry.
